“There are so many thank you’s I want to say but I have to start here. @louisrudd has been my expedition manager and mentor for as long as this expedition was a thing. In fact, he’s the reason I was inspired to give it a go in the first place. I was the expedition manager for an Antarctic traverse he led in 2016/17 and that’s how I became hooked on Antarctica. He helped with kit (helping me hone the weight to a relatively tiny total), with training (Greenland, Norway, Iceland and one famous 19-mile tyre haul along the Brecon-Monmouth canal) and with contacts and networks for advice and fundraising. Because he’s done three journeys in Antarctica, he knew everything I was going through. The number of times I was crying on the phone and he talked me into another day’s skiing numbered, well, a lot. Probably 90% of the days for the first 3 weeks at least! I texted him saying ‘crying. Just want it to be over,’ on more than one occasion. He always knew when to be kind and when to tell me to get my shi*t together and get out of my tent. I honestly couldn’t have done it without him. I may have been unsupported in a technical sense (ie no resupplies) but the moral support was essential. Even though it’s what I’d wanted and dreamed of for years, it didn’t mean it wasn’t the hardest thing I’ve ever done once I was out there. Louis, you made it a little easier every day.”
